⚡ 150 kWh Hybrid Solar & Peak Shaving Solution

1️⃣ Project Overview

This 150 kWh hybrid solar plant was engineered to merge renewable generation with intelligent peak-shaving battery technology, creating a cost-saving and highly resilient energy solution for commercial operations.

By integrating solar PV with a strategically sized lithium-battery bank, the system reduces overall grid consumption while shaving expensive peak-demand charges — one of the largest contributors to business electricity costs.

The result: lower monthly utility bills, stabilised demand, and enhanced energy security during outages — all while advancing the client’s sustainability goals.

2️⃣ Equipment Used

  • Inverters: 3 × 50 kW Sunsynk Hybrid Inverters
  • Panels: 220 × 460 W JA Solar modules
  • Batteries: 3 × 60 kWh Sunsynk Lithium Batteries
  • Mounting: Klip-lock aluminium rail system
  • Extras: Smart load management and peak-shaving controls

Each component was selected for proven reliability, efficiency, and local after-sales support.

3️⃣ Installation & Challenges

The full installation was completed in three weeks.
Because the building’s roof is unusually high, our team deployed lifting equipment to safely raise and secure the modules.

Following commissioning, we conducted a seven-day performance observation period to fine-tune the peak-shaving algorithm and align it precisely with the client’s daily load profile — ensuring maximum savings and system responsiveness.

4️⃣ System Optimisation

After installation, the system was programmed to prioritise solar production first, followed by battery discharge, with grid import used only when required.

Key optimisations included:
✅ Construction of an additional carport array, expanding solar capacity while providing shaded parking for the fleet.
✅ Installation of smart timers for air-conditioning units to restrict usage to business hours and eliminate night-time waste.
✅ Customised charging profiles to extend battery life and preserve depth-of-discharge limits.

These steps created a self-optimising hybrid system that intelligently balances savings, comfort, and durability.

5️⃣ Performance Graph

Above: Daily energy graph showing solar generation (green), load consumption (red), and grid usage (yellow).
The system produces approximately 485 kWh per day, covering the entire working-hour load and drawing minimal power from the grid after sunset.

6️⃣ Results & Savings

  • Daily solar yield: ≈ 485 kWh
  • Monthly Eskom savings: ≈ R 63 866
  • Return on investment: ± 4 years
  • Backup duration: Up to 4 hours during outages (extended via generator support)

This combination of renewable generation, smart control, and backup coverage gives the client full operational confidence and measurable financial benefit.

7️⃣ Final Thoughts

A hybrid solar plant with peak shaving is more than a technical upgrade — it’s a strategic investment in energy independence, cost stability, and sustainability.

By pairing solar PV with battery intelligence, businesses can:

  • Avoid high-demand tariffs
  • Maintain operations during power interruptions
  • Reduce CO₂ emissions and utility dependence
  • Build a future-proof energy strategy

This installation showcases how smart hybrid technology transforms energy from an overhead cost into a controlled, predictable asset.
